Start with the positions you know

A first letter is often the fastest way to reduce the list. Choose a starting-letter page such as 5 letter words starting with A, then add an ending or contained sequence in the refinement panel. If you know exact positions rather than a continuous fragment, use the crossword pattern solverand enter a question mark for each missing letter.

For Wordle-style puzzles

Five-letter games usually give three kinds of evidence: letters in the correct position, letters present in a different position, and letters that are absent. This page can narrow by a beginning, ending, or contained sequence, but it does not yet interpret colored tiles or exclude a custom letter set. Use it to explore candidates, then check every choice against the game state—including repeated letters. A gray copy of a letter does not always rule that letter out when the answer contains it once and the guess contains it twice.

For crosswords and writing tasks

In a crossword, the clue meaning and crossing letters remain the final test; a word’s length alone is rarely enough. For writing prompts, classroom lists, or vocabulary exercises, switch to A–Z order and use the copy control to collect useful entries. If five letters is not certain, compare the adjacent 4 letter and 6 letter word lists before assuming a crossing answer is correct.

Why the count may differ elsewhere
